Unfortunately, ASOS was not able to score in this eco category. Although the company is working on reducing its CO2 emissions, the successes achieved so far are not significant enough to award an eco point for this. In the summer of 2022, a self-developed eco collection called ASOS Circular Design was launched. The products consisted partly of innovative materials and were designed to be circular. Unfortunately, it was only a few items and the collection has not yet been supplemented or continued.
ASOS has an Animal Welfare Policy, to which all partner brands must adhere. This stipulates, among other things, that no materials made from animal silk, horn, pearls, bones, teeth, fur (including the fur of Mangolian lambs and Angora rabbits), and no components from endangered, exotic, or wild animals may be used. The permitted animal substances, such as leather or wool, must come exclusively as a by-product of animals from the meat industry. Although ASOS doesn't offer any filtering options here either, it's possible to find vegan products. That's why we awarded an eco point in this category.
As a globally operating fashion retailer, which also has brands for which production is carried out, assessing this eco category is not easy. We have used the information that we have found in both, the ASOS Sustainability Report, as well as the classification in the Fashion Transparency Index 2022. First of all: despite initial efforts in the area of working conditions, we have not awarded ASOS any points here. This is mainly because no part of the supply chain is certified according to labor standards. ASOS received a score of 51-60% in the latest Fashion Transparency Index. There was a slight improvement compared to the previous year, but it was still unsatisfactory.
As a department store, ASOS has so far not attached any importance to winning over particularly sustainable partners for its range or expanding the existing one with such. Local providers are also not supported permanently. But what is really annoying is the lack of filters and navigation options in the online shop, to find sustainable products quickly and easily. The existing product descriptions could also contain more information on the sustainability of materials, country of production, etc.
Here ASOS was able to get 2 out of 3 possible eco points. One for the ambitious sustainability goals and the other for the high level of commitment to charity. With the ASOS Foundation, the company supports disadvantaged young people in Great Britain, India and Kenya.
ASOS is the UK's largest online retailer of fashion and cosmetics. As a globally active, listed company, it sells to EU countries, China and the USA, among others. The name was originally an acronym for "AsSeenOnScreen," meaning: as seen on TV. This was the original idea of the two founders, Nick Robertson and Quentin Griffiths. A similar look worn by stars and characters on television would be offered later as clothing that could be bought by everyone. The concept was very well received by investors and was able to go onto the market in 2000 with substantial start-up capital.
The range includes products from 17 own brands as well as around 850 partner brands. ASOS is one of the so-called Ultrafast Fashion brands. Around 4,000 new items are added to the range every week, with a focus on young, trend-conscious buyers.
For this reason, it is surprising that ASOS has set itself high sustainability goals. The aim is to be CO2 neutral by 2023.
At the beginning of 2022, ASOS was suspected of having committed so-called greenwashing. The British Competition and Markets Authority led the investigation. The online news portal "i news" reported that a few weeks before the start of the investigation, ASOS had quietly removed its collections advertised as "sustainable" ("responsible edit") and the corresponding filters from the shop.
ASOS is an eco newbie provider. That means the company has implemented a few sustainable practices, but still has a lot to do to be considered more sustainable. In any case, ASOS has set itself high goals. For example, the target of net zero CO2 emissions by 2030. So far, a few minor successes have been achieved. The fashion giant is very active in the area of donations and charity. And with the very large selection of products, vegans will also find products that meet their standards.
At ASOS you can shop for fashion and cosmetics for men and women. The range is huge and new items are added every week. Apparel, footwear, accessories, athletic wear, jeans, and face and body care products are among the most popular categories with customers. With the numerous subcategories in the menu of the online shop, you can get a good overview. This also includes "Activewear" and "Topshop" sections. In the outlet area, you will always find cheap bargains and the marketplace offers you the opportunity to shop from more than 800 vintage and independent brands from all over the world.
Our tip: Enter the term "vegan" in the search bar and discover items that have been produced in an animal-friendly way.
At ASOS, it is very difficult to find eco-friendly products since there are no filters or collections for such items. However, if you know of a specific brand that offers sustainable products, see if it is available on ASOS.
