Astor & Orion is rated an eco nerd, meaning a great choice for those who want to shop ethical, sustainable and modern jewelry. Astor & Orion’s manufacturing isn’t just based on aesthetics, but on an ethos that views the creation of trash as a design flaw. Its work goes beyond just thinking about what the customer will buy but also about the holistic cycle of the jewelry life: how are they made or how will they be used? And what will happen when they have reached the end of their useful life? Astor & Orion designs earrings that are both planet and workers-friendly and make a real change in the fashion industry.
The earrings you buy from Astor & Orion aren’t meant to be ultimately disposable or left to sit on the shelf. They’re made to be endlessly recycled or composted. For this reason, its primary resource loop is the metals, and more specifically 70% is recycled metals. The most important thing is that this brand designs in a way that allows the jewelry to be easily recycled in the future - which means that it avoids using stones or a whole host of other materials.
The manufacturing process keeps to the basics– melt, cast and finish. It has eliminated the nastiest and most toxic chemicals, yet jewelry production requires some chemicals during the process! The next big sustainability goal of Astor & Orion is to work on this and create an official list of verified banned substances for its suppliers. We’ll keep an eye on that and keep you posted!
We scored points for reduced carbon emissions since the manufacturing partner of this brand holds the Carbon Offset Certificate awarded by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization. But it doesn’t stop there: while navigating on the website you can see the Eco Cart, which offers carbon offsets for shipping. Since all products are packed and sent from Seattle, there is still more to improve in terms of waste reduction, elimination of plastic usage and mitigation of the carbon footprint.
Regarding packaging, all orders are delivered in compostable bags and additional 100% cotton pouches or recycled tissue papers. Plastic tape is still a struggle though and this brand is currently working on finding alternatives to replace it.
All products are fully vegan and cruelty-free.
The materials aren’t just safe for you and the environment but also for the workers who make them. Astor & Orion’s factory is based in Thailand and run by a manufacturing partner that has put more than 15 years of effort into ensuring worker security and equity. The jewelry factory is certified by a 3rd party for ISO 9001 standard, which covers quality and safety and also for ISO14001 which certifies that the wastewater is cleaned and used to irrigate two local soccer fields. In this way, the factory is an essential part of the local community too.
Moreover, the factory is a member of SEDEX, an ethical trade service organization, to ensure the ability of employees to air grievances, the ratio of males to females in management positions and a specific Worker Well-Being Assessment.
While creating the designs, Astor & Orion fully prototypes and tests everything on a 3D printer. This cuts down on the massive waste that is typically generated during the sampling process.
The brand is also partnering with multiple local organizations, such as Ridwell to ensure hard-to-recycle items from the office do not end up in landfills. It’s also a member of the Sustainable Fashion Alliance to help promote conscious consumerism and support sustainable fashion. It has also been exhibited at the O2 Show, the first wholesale tradeshow on ethical and sustainable brands.
Astor & Orion is a jewelry brand founded by Karen Hartman and sculptor Tomas Wittelsbach. Need a cute set of earrings or a necklace? Astor & Orion’s jewelry wants jewelry that doesn’t just make you look good– it wants your jewelry to reflect your eco-conscious values. Sustainability and ethics infuse every step from when your jewelry is created to when it arrives at your door.
Karen Hartmann originally got her start in Hollywood, but transitioned to becoming a manufacturing agent in Asia. Her time spent in factories inspired her to build an eco and worker friendly sustainable manufacturing brand. After seeing Tomas Wittelsbach’s 3d jewelry design, she found the missing piece to create Astor & Orion.
This brand is now manufacturing ethical jewelry for those who care about their environmental footprint on every purchase.
Astor & Orion sells classic hoop earrings, stud earrings, drop and threader earrings, as well as necklaces. The jewelry comes in multiple colors and metals– from silver and gold to stainless steel, for an intricate modern look.
