Sustainability of Bodega

Is Bodega sustainable?

As a streetwear retailer, Bodega collaborates with an extensive number of well-known brands, such as New Balance, Adidas, Helmut Lang, Nike or Air Jordan, and offers exclusive items for both men and women. Sustainability-wise, Bodega presents very little detail about its plans towards a more eco-friendly fashion scene. It is true that this brand has taken steps to enhance its sustainability-focused operations by building clean water systems in Africa and planting trees around the globe with One Tree Planted - a non-profit organization that plants trees in countries all over the world.

However, when it comes to the products available on the website, there is no clear information about the production process, the supply chain or even the fabrics used. For this reason, we perceive Bodega as an eco newbie brand, meaning that the company has already introduced a few sustainable practices for the people and the planet, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

We would love to know more about Bodega eco-conscious initiatives and plans for the future, which is why we suggest that it presents these types of facts in a more transparent way.

Environmental footprint of Bodega

As mentioned above, little to no facts about Bodega's sustainable practices are available online. However, we learned that this brand is currently auditing and working to lower its carbon footprint. In addition, Bodega ships all of its orders using USP's carbon neutral option, meaning that the transport has a lower impact on the environment.

Animal welfare at Bodega

Bodega has several items made with low environmental impact materials, such as merino wool socks, recycled leather bags or shoe soles made of plant-based materials. However, no information regarding this brand’s animal welfare policy is disclosed online.

Ethical working conditions at Bodega

This brand aims to support and promote young local artists and ensure the creative growth of future generations. As a 100% minority-owned business, Bodega is inclusive of all individuals, regardless of race, age, gender or sexual orientation. Bodega takes pride in its ability to help employees evolve and advance in their careers. For instance, this brand promoted 69% of its managers from internal hires that started at the entry-level.
No further information related to this brand's employees is available online.

Other eco-friendly practices at Bodega

As a true supporter of everything related to art and youth culture, Bodega partnered up with Boston Centre for the Arts (BCA) and created the Boston Art Book Fair, which is held in BCA’s historic Cyclorama. The Boston Art Book Fair is one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast and has exhibited over 130 artists and publishers since its inception in 2017.

Because Bodega's mission to empower young artists goes beyond physical retail spaces, the company also launched Pirate Radio - an online music playlist accompanied by interviews with musicians. There they cover artists' experiences during the production process, the inspiration behind their albums, as well as their experiences while on tours across the world.

This brand is also a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and is on a mission to create valuable opportunities for Indigenous individuals and People of Color. For this reason, Bodega collaborates with a range of non-profit organizations that support local causes, such as Black Lives Matter, Color Of Change, The Love Land Foundation or Center for Black Equity.

About Bodega

Who is Bodega?

Founded by Jay Gordon, Dan N. and Oliver Mak in 2006, Bodega is an accessories and apparel brand fusing art, fashion, design and counterculture. In the early 2000s, Bodega's founders were struggling to find meaningful work as artists and, when they finally met through a street marketing company, the trio decided to create a safe space for the youth culture to express itself.

The magic of Bodega lies in its "hidden retail" concept and in its ability to connect customers with like-minded people at its events. Bodega is an inclusive company that welcomes people of all ages, races and sexual orientation to enter its stores and experience a new way of shopping.

As a streetwear retailer, Bodega collaborates with a wide variety of apparel brands. Because of this, it is difficult to define it as a 100% sustainable company, as far as products are concerned.

However, Bodega is involved in numerous projects aimed at making the future a better place. For instance, this company built water systems in Africa with Kumanokoido, an organization that produces teddy bears using individually selected fabrics that represent different global communities and cultures. Bodega has also made donations to The National Forest Foundation, plants trees around the world with One Tree Planted and is dedicated to lowering its carbon footprint.

What can I buy at Bodega?

Shopping at Bodega might be an experience in itself, as this company offers a wide spectrum of products, ranging from Bodega's own label to world-famous brands, such as The North Face, Sasquatchfabrix, Air Jordan, Stone Island or Billionaire Boys Club. This brand offers mostly menswear pieces, but shoppers can also find a selection of womenswear and unisex garments on its website.

In terms of eco-friendly finds, Bodega offers a selection of accessories and clothing made of sustainable materials too. Customers can browse through products made of recycled leather, sneakers made of recycled plastic, organic cotton socks or products that have been dyed using babul bark, sappan wood and madder root.

Apart from these, customers can enjoy a large diversity of offerings, such as books, magazines, spray paint, skate decks, home accessories and even personal care items.
