Sustainability of Foot Locker

Is Foot Locker sustainable?

Foot Locker is taking active steps towards more transparent supply chain operations and is committed to building on its progress as far as sustainability processes are concerned. For this reason, we labeled Foot Locker with our eco skilled badge! This means that the company is currently offering products made of eco-friendly fabrics, is making efforts to reduce its carbon emissions, offers sustainable packaging options, and ensures that workers are fairly paid and operate in a safe environment.

In 2021, the company celebrated an important milestone in its sustainability journey as it published its first-ever impact report covering two fiscal years, 2019 and 2020, that provided information related to Foot Locker's global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. According to this, Foot Locker's global CSR program focuses on four key pillars, including leveraging the power of communities, reducing the company's overall environmental impact, strengthening the sustainability of the supply chain, and operating ethically and transparently.

Environmental footprint of Foot Locker

Foot Locker is taking steps to limit the consequences of climate change. The company does that by implementing procedures that diminish greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance waste and recycling approaches and improve the efficiency of the supply chain.

Foot Locker also highlights how important it is to include the young generation in sustainability activities. In fact, encouraging the youth culture to have a say and be environmentally conscious is one of the company's top priorities.

Moreover, as noted in the company's Global Environmental and Climate Change Statement, Foot Locker is taking active steps controlling the products' lifecycle in an ethical and environmentally-responsible manner. The company is making efforts to comply with environmental regulations and is constantly monitoring, reviewing and reporting its business' impact on the environment.

In 2019, more than two hundred Foot Locker stores in North America and Europe were upgraded with LED lighting, which led to a vast reduction in energy. To date, 1,600 stores across North America have been upgraded to the same lighting approaches.

Foot Locker has also partnered up with four different FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified vendors to create sales tags and is making plans to improve the way it currently monitors the environmental impact of consumer bags and hangers. In 2020, the company started trialing a 100% recyclable synthetic paper called Hopsyn, and began using soy inks for all the in-store printed materials.

Chemicals management is another important issue for this sportswear brand. According to Foot Locker’s 2021 Impact Report, the brand maintains a detailed Safety Data Sheet for each chemical product in its facilities and factories. This company also conducts regular site inspections to test storage, labeling, and the overall conditions of any hazardous chemicals.

Animal welfare at Foot Locker

When shopping at Foot Locker, customers can enjoy a selection of eco-friendly items. These include streetwear made of recycled and vegan materials, such as sneakers made of recycled plastic and rubber or tops and bottoms made of recycled polyester or organic cotton.

On the other hand, it is important to note that little to no information on Foot Locker's animal cruelty policy is disclosed to the public.

Marketplace sustainability at Foot Locker

As far as Foot Locker’s marketplace sustainability is concerned, the sportswear and accessories retailer does very little to support local brands, offer fully transparent product descriptions or promote eco-friendly brands only. For this reason, we couldn’t give Foot Locker any points for its sustainable marketplace operations, but we hope that the company will consider a more eco-friendly approach soon.

Ethical working conditions at Foot Locker

Foot Locker has taken steps to take care of its employees and provide them with safe and fair working conditions. According to its 2021 Impact Report, all of the in-store team members and distribution center team members are earning the minimum wage or above.
As for the social part, Foot Locker supports different ethnical backgrounds and it currently has an extensive pool of talent made of various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

With its work environment policies, Foot Locker aims to ensure work environments that appreciate and sustain human rights. The company strictly prohibits any form of work that is dangerous to the health or safety of any team members and forbids forced or compulsory work.

Other eco-friendly practices at Foot Locker

Foot Locker's impact goes beyond its physical and digital stores and is trying to improve the lives of numerous communities. For instance, the Foot Locker Community Store on Old Spanish Trail in Huston, Texas. As shoppers enter the store, they are welcomed by locally-hired staff and offered a free haircut, beverages or even a job training program. Similarly, community-based designers' and artists' work is also showcased across the Old Spanish Trail store.

In partnership with the 4PF Label, Foot Locker has also built a basketball park in Oakland Park, Atlanta. The famous rapper Lil Baby was present at the unveiling of the basketball park and provided 200 bikes for the kids in the local neighborhood.

Foot Locker has also partnered up with the former athlete and psychotherapist Liz B Croft, and designer Drake Cereal, to bring to life a complete apparel capsule collection that promotes mental health awareness among athletes. Donations were also made to a mental health non-profit organization, called the Cheatcode Foundation.

As far as the garments are concerned, Foot Locker is constantly expanding its network of sustainable suppliers and is building on its eco-friendly practices of using organic or recycled cotton sourced from certified producers. This company is currently collaborating with a Bluesign-certified zipper supplier.

About Foot Locker

Who is Foot Locker?

Foot Locker is an American specialty athletic retailer, selling shoes, clothing and accessories. It dates back to 1879, as a successor to the F. W. Woolworth Company. Also, Foot Locker takes pride in its outstanding selection of unique items that can rarely be found anywhere else.

As far as the brand's sustainability plans and actions are concerned, this brand offers streetwear made of recycled and vegan materials, such as shoes, tracksuits, tops and bottoms.

In March 2022, Foot Locker announced its goals to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 or sooner. This marks a critical milestone in the company's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) journey and shows Foot Locker's commitment to building on its current progress and strengthening its plans for a more sustainable future.
