Founded in 1901 as a small neighborhood drugstore by Charles R. Walgreen Sr., Walgreens is one of the most respected and trusted American corporations. Charles R. Walgreen Sr. purchased the first Chicago drugstore in 1901, from Isaac W. Blood, after working there as a pharmacist, and laid the foundation of the Walgreen chain. The founder's enthusiasm and ambition led to new ideas for expansion, and he soon started manufacturing his line of drugs to offer customers high-quality and low priced products and services.

The history goes that Walgreens was one of the first entrepreneurs to ever provide home delivery options for customers living nearby. While he was on the phone with the customer, taking notes and repeating everything out loud so that his pharmacy assistants could hear him, the order was already on its way by the time the phone conversation was over. Moreover, Walgreens invented the malted milkshake in 1992, and its clients would even queue around the soda fountain to buy the "double-rich chocolate malted milk."

After  Charles R. Walgreen Sr.'s death in 1939, his son, Charles Walgreen Jr. took over and became the company's president. From that point, Walgreens was going to be one of the most modern drugstore companies in the US and by 1953, was the largest self-service retailer in the country.

Fast forward to the 00s', Walgreens became the first even drugstore chain to provide prescription labels in numerous languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Arabic. In 2012,  Walgreens opened its 8,000th store in Los Angeles, and in 2014, the retailer started delivering its goods in all four corners of the world, after merging with Alliance Boots - a leading international health and beauty group.

In terms of sustainable practices and plans, Walgreens is a member of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) Sustainability and Zero Waste Committees which encourages the reduction of greenhouse emissions, waste reduction and a circular economy.

Additionally, the brand is making efforts to source all the palm oil in its Walgreens-owned brands only from Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)-certified suppliers by the end of 2023.

When shopping at Walgreens, customers can find a huge variety of products, such as medicines and treatments, vitamins and supplements, personal care items, household essentials, and even toys, books and games. Services are also available in-store and online and these include a photo booth, prescription ordering and refill, vaccines and flu shots scheduling facilities.

Apart from these, customers can also find care options for different health conditions, such as diabetes or information related to health insurance options, as well as labs and at-home kits for testing. These include pediatric collections, routine blood tests or employee wellness testing.

However, Walgreens offers a limited selection of eco-friendly and vegan products on its website, which only includes a handful of beauty products, drinks and supplements.
