Sustainability of Allbirds

Is Allbirds sustainable?

Allbirds has many sustainability initiatives set in place and is committed to minimising its environmental impact. For this reason, we perceive it as an eco skilled brand. The company manufactures its products using natural materials, such as merino wool, eucalyptus tree fibres, and sugarcane-based foam. Some products also use recycled materials such as PET bottles.

As a certified B Corporation, Allbirds is meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. The brand is also taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint. Allbirds works to offset these emissions by calculating the carbon emissions associated with manufacturing each product and investing in renewable energy projects.

We were also pleased to learn that Allbirds offers customers the possibility to purchase slightly imperfect and gently used products via its dedicated online marketplace, ReRun™. Through this initiative, Allbirds is extending the lifespan of its products and limiting fashion's impact on the environment by keeping them out of landfills. What’s more, Allbirds managed to reimagine shoe packaging and now uses 90% post-consumer recycled cardboard as shoeboxes, shopping bags, and mailers.

What we also liked about Allbirds was its openness and transparency about its CO2 emissions. The brand knows that it's polluting the planet and is putting effort to drive emissions to zero. According to the website, Allbirds takes full responsibility for its environmental impact and is taxing itself for the CO2 emissions and is investing in carbon offsets to fund projects that neutralize its footprint.

Environmental footprint of Allbirds

Allbirds measures everything that contributes to its carbon footprint, from the factory floor to the lights in the headquarters. The brand aims to be more than carbon-neutral, with ambitions to become climate positive. To do this, Allbirds relies on regenerative agriculture, the use of renewable materials and responsible energy sources.

In 2019, the company was recertified as a B Corp which only emphasised its commitment to doing business that serves both the planet and the people. A year later, Allbirds became the world's first fashion company to label 100% of its products with their carbon footprint. Right now, all products listed on the website offer comprehensive details about their CO2 emissions, fabrics used and certifications.

The brand is committed to responsible sourcing of materials and works with suppliers who adhere to strict environmental and social standards. By 2025, Allbirds strives to use 100% renewable energy for its owned & operated facilities, 100% renewable energy for its finished goods manufacturers and achieve a steady state of more than 95% ocean shipping.

Animal welfare at Allbirds

Allbirds does not use any materials that involve animal cruelty and sources its wool from ZQ Merino, which is a New Zealand-based organisation that guarantees the highest standards of animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. ZQ products guarantee that the sheep are adequately treated, well fed, live natural and healthy lives and are not subjected to mulesing. At the moment, wool is the only animal fiber used in Allbirds’ products.

Ethical working conditions at Allbirds

Allbirds has an extensive code of conduct set in place and runs regular checks on all its manufacturers and subcontractors to make sure they all stay on track and adhere to Allbirds' high standards. However, we could not track any certifications to support the company's claims. At this moment, we cannot say for certain if Allbirds' factory workers are paid a living wage or if their safety is ensured at every step of the production process.

Other eco-friendly practices at Allbirds

Albirds has partnered up with numerous independent designers and created limited-edition collections that emphasise a sustainable lifestyle. In 2022, the footwear company partnered with New York-based fashion designer Rosie Assoulin to produce a collection of Sugar Sliders that capture the spirit of summer in the big city.
Allbirds also worked with Adidas to create an ultralight running shoe using sustainable materials. The partnership resulted in the lowest carbon footprint shoes to date. What's more, in 2019,  the footwear company partnered up with Just Water to design limited edition Tree Toppers and Tree Runners shoes made of Brazilian sugarcane and FSC® Certified trees. The duo donated 100% of the proceeds to Earth Alliance’s Amazon Forest Fund to support wildlife relief.

About Allbirds

Who is Allbirds?

Allbirds is determined to provide customers with environmentally friendly and sustainably-produced apparel and shoes. The brand was established by New Zealand native Tim Brown, who is well versed in the qualities of merino wool. Intrigued by the lack of merino wool in the footwear industry, Tim decided to begin the journey of Allbirds. A few years and many research sessions later, teamed up with Joey Zwillinger, an engineer and renewables expert. The duo crafted a never-before-seen wool fabric made specifically for footwear. The result? A completely new shoe category inspired by natural materials and on a path to create finer things in a more conscious way.

Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger established Allbirds in 2016, intending to produce fashionable, yet comfortable shoes. This brand is based on three straightforward principles that include design simplicity, comfort and natural fabrics. No flashy logos can be spotted in Allbirds’ designs, as the brand believes in products’ quality rather than senseless details. The Wool Runner is the brand's signature shoe and is constructed of plush merino wool with a sole made of sugarcane-derived foam. Since its launch, the business has added a variety of shoes made from materials including eucalyptus tree fibers, recycled plastic bottles, and more to its product line. Celebrities and regular people alike have embraced the brand, which has grown in popularity over recent years.

Also, Allbirds is a B Corp-certified brand, which means that it takes sustainability seriously. This company sees the environment as one of its key stakeholders and aims to treat it with uttermost respect and care.

What can I buy at Allbirds?

Allbirds is an easy destination for any environmentally-conscious shopper. This brand offers footwear, clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Products range from everyday trainers, running shoes, hiking shoes, slippers, sandals or flats, as well as T-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, heats and scarves.
Some of the shoes are made of lightweight, breathable eucalyptus fibres that provide next-level comfort. Their natural rubber soles are FSC-certified natural and provide wearers with a strong foothold on pavement.

Additionally, extensive information about Allbirds’ operations can be accessed on the product pages, which gives shoppers an insightful overview of the brand’s supply chain. That is how we learnt about Allbirds’ commitment to using Wool, Tree, and Sugar whenever possible, because of their natural carbon-minimising ability. This brand also uses recycled synthetics to supplement natural material content when necessary to increase the durability of its products.
