We have closely examined HanesBrands, the umbrella company that owns the Hanes brand and noticed all the amazing sustainability initiatives it’s involved in. However, not all of those apply to Hanes, which is why we rate it as an eco skilled brand.
Since 1901 Hanes has been creating comfortable clothes people love to live in. The brand aims to provide full transparency over its supply chain and opened its doors to a few university students to come in and assess the company’s operations and progress on sustainability claims. While it’s true that the brand is taking active steps in the right direction, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
During our research process, we learned that Hanes’ ComfortWash®-labeled items are manufactured at the company’s headquarters facility, in El Salvador, USA. The raw materials are sourced from HanesBrands’ cotton farm, where the company managed to decrease the amount of water and pesticides used in the manufacturing process. To be more specific, the brand successfully managed to lower water usage by 8% since 2019 and it's on its way to a 25% reduction by 2030.
We've also learned that in 2023, Hanes was selected as the Energy Star Partner of the year for the 13th time and that 48% of Hanes' electricity comes from renewable sources, using biomass, hydro and geothermal energy. What's more, Hanes t-shirts, sweats and underwear eliminate up to 60 million plastic bottles from landfills annually.
However, the cotton used by Hanes is not certified by any sustainability authority, which makes it challenging for us to fully evaluate the accuracy of Hanes’ claims. At the same time, we discovered that Hanes recycles all cotton byproducts as cattle feed, but there is no information about the brand’s stance on reusing excess fabric to create other products. We also couldn’t find any details regarding sustainable packaging or transport, vegan or clothing options. On the bright side, we were happy to see that Hanes has 179 outlet stores in various parts of the US.
Hanes produces its ComfortWash® items locally, at its headquarters in El Salvador. However, it’s important to mention that this collection is fairly limited and represents a small portion of Hanes' complete line of products. No other information applicable to this brand can be accessed online.
HanesBrands’s products are generated, sourced and manufactured under acceptable conditions set by the company’s suppliers. Wherever animal products are being used, the company expects suppliers to treat animals in a humane manner, which includes provision of appropriate food shelter, as well as freedom from distress or hunger. However, we couldn’t find any information related to Hanes the brand’s stance on animal welfare or the use of exotic skins or fur.
Hanes is taking pride in the way it treats factory workers at the El Salvador facility, but there is no indication that the same applies to workers at all factories. Please note that information related to this topic couldn’t be found online.
Hanes has been collaborating with organizations, community groups and people from all over the country for more than 13 years to raise awareness for those who are homeless or living in transitional housing. The brand has also been working together with Invisible People - a non-profit organization committed to educating people about homelessness.
Also, over the past 13 years, Hanes has given more than 3.5 million pairs of socks to our multiple partners across the nation. These donations have been distributed to people in need in various areas with the help of its partners. To find out more about Hanes' commitment to good causes, please refer to the website.

In 2021, the brand also earned a spot on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies for the third year in a row.
